This Thursday, July 15th monthly enhanced Child Tax Credit payments will start going out to families – a program under the American Rescue Plan that is anticipated to lead to a significant reduction in childhood poverty. Tens of millions of American families will receive this critical support – up to $300 per child per month – automatically. Every Senate Democrat supported these expanded CTC payments – and Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell spent the last week reminding the American people that every single Republican voted against it.

Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said on the Senate floor, “This is an example of the difference between a Democratic and a Republican majority in the Senate. As Leader McConnell openly reminds everyone, not a single Republican voted in favor of expanding the Child Tax Credit through the American Rescue Plan. I am so proud that Democrats found a way to help American families, help American kids with a brighter, stronger future, despite Republican opposition.”

Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY):  “I was at least somewhat surprised that the new administration recommend we spend $2 trillion more in what’s called the American Rescue Package. They used a device, not inappropriate, but a device called budget reconciliation, which you’re not able to use for all things but allows you in the Senate to pass something at 51 votes instead of 60. Not unfair, but hard to do in a 50-50 Senate to get everybody in line to do something one party only - they did, and they passed the American Rescue Package without a single Republican vote in the House or Senate.” [Remarks at Northern KY Chamber of Commerce, 7/8/21]

Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY):  “You’re going to get a hell of a lot of money. I didn’t vote for it, but I hope you spend it wisely, because Kentucky, for example, is going to get about twice as much money, not just government but in various parts of our state, state and local government are going to benefit enormously, going to get about twice as much money as you got last year during the pandemic. So hopefully this windfall which is going to hit us big time, will be wisely spent at all levels because I hope this windfall won’t happen again.” [Remarks at Northern KY Chamber of Commerce, 7/8/21]
