Schumer, Warren Lead Senate & House Democrats In Amicus Brief Slamming President Trump’s Lawless Attempts To Dismantle The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB); Congressional Democrats Demand Accountability For Mass Firings Amidst The Chaos Of The Trump Administration

Washington, D.C. – Today, Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Senate and House Democrats filed an amicus brief with the DC Circuit Court in a lawsuit brought forth after President Trump illegally fired staff at the CFPB. Leader Schumer, 45 members of the Democratic caucus, and over 180 Congressional Democrats were joined by former lawmakers Chris Dodd (D-CT) and Barney Frank (D-MA) in defending the CFPB.

Today, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) led their Senate and House Democratic colleagues in filing an amicus brief with the DC Circuit Court condemning mass firings at the CFPB. The members outline that Congress created the CFPB to combat the abuses that caused the devastating 2008 financial crisis, and the President does not have the power to abolish it.

“President Trump’s entire slash and burn agenda is geared toward making life better for billionaires and big banks and worse for working families,” said Leader Schumer. “The CFPB was created  to protect every day consumers from predatory financial practices, but President Trump is dead set on reversing course and putting his thumb on the scale for big banks. Gutting staff at CFPB is only the beginning – Trump has proven he wants to eliminate the CFPB altogether.  We urge the Courts to recognize it is only Congress – not the President – who has control over CFPB, and reject this administration’s unlawful power grab.”

The amicus brief has been signed by Leader Schumer (D-NY) and Senators Warren (D-MA), Coons (D-DE), Welch (D-VT), Schiff (D-CA), Lujan (D-NM), Blumenthal (D-CT), Murphy (D-CT), Markey (D-MA), Van Hollen (D-MD), Alsobrooks (D-MD), Duckworth (D-IL), Murray (D-WA), Hassan (D-NH), Baldwin (D-WI), Smith (D-MN), Bennet (D-CO), Hickenlooper (D-CO), Cortez Masto (D-NV), Heinrich (D-NM), Schatz (D-HI), Shaheen (D-NH), Whitehouse (D-RI), Gallego (D-AZ), Padilla (D-CA), Slotkin (D-MI), Warren (D-MA), Gillibrand (D-NY), Wyden (D-OR), Merkley (D-OR), Kelly (D-AZ), Hirono (D-HI), Fetterman (D-PA), Warner (D-VA), Klobuchar (D-MN), Blunt Rochester (D-DE), Ossoff (D-GA), Kaine (D-VA), Warnock (D-GA), Cantwell (D-WA), Durbin (D-IL), Peters (D-MI), Reed (D-RI), Kim (D-NJ), Booker (D-NJ), and Rosen (D-NV) as well as over 180 House Democrats.
