Schumer Statement On Senate Vote To Override President Trump’s Veto Of The Resolution To Terminate Emergency Declaration

Washington, D.C. – Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer today released the following statement after Senate Republicans refused to override President Trump’s veto of the resolution terminating his national emergency declaration, which passed both the House and Senate in September with bipartisan support.

“By voting against this veto override, Senate Republicans are essentially condoning and creating a permission structure for the president’s violation of the Separation of Powers and weakening Congress’ power of the purse. It is maddening that at a time when our military and their families need our continued support as much as ever, Republicans have paved the way for the president to raid and divert funding for military projects across the country to pay for his ineffective and expensive southern border wall, which he promised Mexico would pay for.”
