Schumer Statement on Roberts Court Decision to Strike Down Commonsense Gun Safety Measures in New York

Washington, D.C.   Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer released the following statement today after the Supreme Court issued a decision in the case New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen, striking down New York State’s commonsense gun safety law that keeps our communities safe:

“As the extremist, right-wing Roberts Court strikes down commonsense gun safety measures – that have been on the books for a hundred years – it has become all the more urgent for us to act at every level of government to keep our children, police officers and communities safe. With this far out-of-the-mainstream and dangerous decision that flies in the face of overwhelming public support for rational gun safety measures, it’s no wonder the public is increasingly losing faith in the Roberts Court.

“For the first time in nearly 30 years, Congress is finally taking steps today to loosen the gun lobby’s vice-like grip which has held back meaningful legislative action to address the gun violence epidemic. Now more than ever – especially given today’s awful decision – more must be done to address gun violence and we Democrats will continue to fight to keep our communities safe.”
