Schumer, Pelosi Announce Senator Harry Mason Reid Will Lie in State in the United States Capitol Rotunda

Washington, D.C. – Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi today announced that former Senate Majority Leader Harry Mason Reid will lie in state in the United States Capitol Rotunda on Wednesday, January 12th, and events will include formal arrival and departure ceremony.

Senator Harry Reid dedicated his entire life to serving the people of Nevada.  His storied career in public service spanned nearly five decades – serving in the State Assembly, as Lieutenant Governor, in the House of Representatives and in the United States Senate.  Senator Reid led the Senate Democratic Caucus for twelve years, and as Majority Leader, he helped enact landmark legislation including the Affordable Care Act, the Dodd–Frank Act and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

“Harry Reid will be remembered as a great American, father, husband, Senate leader and one of history’s most devoted fighters for the people of Nevada and the poor and middle class throughout the country,” said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.  “He was tough-as-nails strong, but caring and compassionate, and always went out of his way quietly to help people who needed help.  Harry never forgot where he came from, and I will miss my dear friend and mentor greatly.  Few dedicated their life and career to working for and delivering for working families like Harry Reid, and it will be an honor to pay tribute to him in the Capitol next week.”

“Senator Harry Reid was a titan of public service, who for more than four decades fought relentlessly for working families like his own,” said Speaker Nancy Pelosi.  “One of the most commanding and consequential Senate Majority Leaders in history, he forged extraordinary legislative progress: rescuing our economy during the Great Recession, protecting hardworking families with Wall Street reforms and moving our nation closer to our goal of universal health coverage.  It is my solemn honor as House Speaker to pay tribute to a legendary leader, a great American and my dear friend, Senator Harry Reid. ”

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the ceremony will be limited to invited guests only.  Additional details will be announced at a later date.
