Schumer Calls On Leader McConnell To Establish New Senate Select Committee On The Climate Crisis

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer Introduces New Legislation To Establish A New Senate Select Committee On The Climate Crisis And Urges Republican Leader McConnell To Schedule A Stand-Alone Vote On The Bill

Schumer’s Call For New Committee On Climate Change Is Latest Step Senate Democrats Have Taken To Go On Offense And Highlight Republicans’ Refusal To Acknowledge Science And Facts About The Urgent Crisis Of Climate Change – Just Last Week, The Entire Senate Dem Caucus Co-Sponsored Resolution Calling On The U.S. And Congress To Take Immediate Action To Address Climate Change And Schumer Will Soon Introduce Legislation To Defund Trump Admin’s Fake Climate Panel

Schumer: It’s Time For The U.S. Senate To Dedicate A New Committee Solely Dedicated To Climate Change And The Economic And National Security Implications Of Inaction

Washington, D.C.— Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) today introduced legislation to establish a new Senate Select Committee on the Climate Crisis and urged Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) to schedule a stand-alone vote on the resolution. The Senate committee would be a sister committee to the House Select Committee and would be tasked with investigating, holding hearings, and issuing findings on how climate inaction is harming the economic and national security interests of the U.S. Just last week, the entire Senate Democratic Caucus co-sponsored a resolution calling on the United States and Congress to take immediate action to address climate change and soon, Schumer will introduce legislation to defund Trump administration’s fake climate panel. The resolution is one of many steps Democrats are taking to go on offense and highlight Republicans’ refusal to acknowledge science and facts about the urgent crisis of climate change.

“Climate change is one of the most significant crises facing humanity, and it’s time for the United States Senate to dedicate a new committee solely to the climate crisis,” said Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer. “Not only have Senate Republicans yet to put forward a single plan to seriously address climate change, many of them still deny basic science and facts. Democrats believe that Congress must take urgent action, which is why I am calling on Leader McConnell to hold a stand-alone vote on this resolution to create a new Senate committee devoted to examining the many costs of climate inaction.”

Text of the resolution can be found here.
