Washington, D.C. – Today, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) released the following statement following the antisemitic attack at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Michigan:
“I am horrified and appalled by the attack at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Michigan, one the largest and most vibrant Jewish congregations in America.
“Thank God, it appears no one was killed and the attacker was neutralized. I am so grateful for the quick reaction of synagogue security and local law enforcement, and my prayers are with the children and families of the congregation and the entire community of West Bloomfield. Thankfully, it appears the community was well prepared given the sad reality of the heightened threat faced by Jewish communities across the nation.
“The idea of a car with explosives and an armed driver ramming through the doors of a school filled with kids is equal parts terrifying and infuriating. The potential for catastrophic loss of innocent life is unfathomable. It is yet another stark reminder of the hate and danger facing Jewish communities, from the attacks on the Capitol Jewish Museum in DC, the peaceful march in Boulder, Colorado, the Hanukkah celebration on Bondi Beach, the arson at Beth Israel Synagogue in Mississippi, and FIVE shootings at synagogues in the last week alone.
“Antisemitism is not theoretical. It is real, and it is deadly. In solidarity with good-thinking people everywhere, it must be faced head on, denounced, and defeated. Every one of us has a responsibility to not just stand up against this pernicious hate, but to fight it wholeheartedly, no matter where it comes from.”
