New York, N.Y. – Today, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) released the following statement on Senate Democrats’ successful fight to strike a cruel and devastating provision to rip food away from millions of Americans in the Republicans’ “Big, Ugly, Betrayal Bill.” Below is Leader Schumer’s statement:

“Senate Republicans are hellbent on paying for tax cuts for billionaires by ripping food out of the mouths of kids, seniors, veterans and families.

“But Senate Democrats successfully fought the Republicans’ latest scheme to shift SNAP costs onto states, blowing a hole in state budgets.

“While this is a small but important win, the “Big, Ugly, Betrayal” still includes the most brutal assault to food assistance in American history. It slashes benefits for all 40 million SNAP recipients and buries struggling Americans in red tape just to eat.

“Senate Democrats won’t stop fighting these cruel attacks. We’ll keep standing up to protect the programs that feed working families—not the tax breaks that feed billionaires.”
