Leader Schumer Statement On President Trump’s FY2026 Budget Request

New York, N.Y. – Today, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) released the following statement after President Trump released the supplemental request for his FY2026 Budget yesterday, which would raise costs for American families, cut critical programs, and benefit billionaires: 

“Trump’s 2026 budget request is a betrayal of the promises he made to the American people during the campaign and a roadmap to a recession – Senate Democrats will never let it become law.

“The radical budget would be a gut punch to working families and a windfall for billionaires – raising prices for families while slashing the very programs their communities rely on — from cancer research and crime prevention to housing, food assistance, and mental health care. It guts efforts to fight the opioid crisis and shortchanges the safety of our troops, all to bankroll massive tax giveaways for billionaires — including Trump’s own family.

“The timing of this budget proposal is all the more galling. As we speak, Trump and his allies are trying to ram through a radical plan to take health care and good jobs from millions of working families to pay for a massive tax giveaway for his family and the nation’s most wealthy and well-connected billionaires in the reconciliation bill.

“Trump’s budget is sinister proof of his true goal and makes his priorities perfectly clear: he doesn’t care about you or your family - he is dead set on making an America that benefits only him, and his billionaires’ club. Senate Democrats won’t let it happen.”
