Leader Schumer Statement On General Motors’ Major $888 Million Investment In Western NY Manufacturing Plant

New York, N.Y. – Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) today released the following statement on General Motors’ decision to invest $888 million in its Tonawanda, NY propulsion plant to produce V-8 engines, used in full-size trucks and SUVs. When this plant was slated for potential closure and in the aftermath of the financial collapse of 2008, Senator Schumer went to bat for GM, the plant, and UAW workers and worked with President Obama to keep the plant open:

“With today’s announced massive GM investment, it is clear the future of America’s auto industry will be powered by engines made right here by Western NY’s UAW workforce. I have long fought to preserve and expand General Motors’ manufacturing in Tonawanda — including when it was on the verge of closure and fighting to help it grow ever since. Auto manufacturing is built into Tonawanda’s DNA and this historic $888 million investment will make sure it stays that way. This community – and its powerhouse union workforce – are second to none, and I can think of no better place to drive the next generation of American engine manufacturing.”
