Leader Schumer Statement After Senate Passes Bipartisan Russia Sanctions Package

Washington, D.C. – Today, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) released the following statement after the Senate passed the bipartisan Russia sanctions package:

“Today’s bipartisan vote sends a clear message: the United States stands firmly with Ukraine in its fight against Vladimir Putin’s authoritarian invasion.

“While President Trump has pandered to Vladimir Putin, the Ukrainian people have continued to innovate, persevere, and fight with extraordinary resolve to turn the tide of this war.

“By imposing steep sanctions that will further drain the Kremlin’s war chest, Congress is delivering an important reminder to Putin and his allies that this is a losing war and authoritarianism will never go unchallenged.

“Actions speak louder than words, and today’s vote reflects what an overwhelming majority of Americans believe: Russia’s unprovoked assault on Ukraine’s sovereignty must fail.

“I urge Trump to use these sanctions to hit Putin where it hurts. Continuing to appease Putin won’t work.”
