Washington, D.C. – Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) released the following statement slamming Senate Republicans’ efforts to change Senate rules to push through President Trump’s unqualified nominees:
Last month, Senate Democrats worked in good faith with our Republican colleagues to try to get an agreement on a nominations package before the August recess.
As everyone remembers, Donald Trump swooped in at the last minute, told us to, “Go to hell,” and those talks fell apart.
Now, instead of standing up to Trump, Senate Republicans want to blow-up Senate rules and grease the skids just to jam through more of Trump’s lousy, unqualified nominees.
That’s not just reckless—it’s dangerous. It guts the Senate’s constitutional role of advice and consent, weakens our checks and balances, and guarantees that historically bad nominees will only get worse with even less oversight.
Democrats will not be accomplices to Donald Trump’s sabotage of the Senate. We are ready, as we were a month ago, to work in good faith with our Republican colleagues to make sure nominees who are qualified move forward.
