Leader Schumer Floor Remarks Denouncing The Trump Administration’s $5 Million Award To The Family Of January 6th Insurrectionist Ashley Babbitt As An Insult To Capitol Police And First Responders

Washington, D.C. – Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) today spoke on the Senate floor to express disappointment after the Trump administration awarded five million dollars to the family of January 6th insurrectionist Ashley Babbitt, in an insult to Capitol Police and first responders everywhere. Below are Senator Schumer’s remarks, which can also be viewed here:

I am deeply disappointed that the Republican Leader did not condemn the Trump administration’s most recent attack on our beloved Capitol Police.

I am appalled and disgusted at the disrespect the Trump administration is showing the Capitol Police by awarding $5 million to the family of Ashley Babbitt, who broke into the U.S. Capitol on January 6th.

And I am appalled and disgusted at the thought that my colleagues on the other side of the aisle support Trump’s decision.

Awarding the family of an insurrectionist five million dollars is an insult to first responders – those who are in the Capitol and those everywhere.

It sends a sickening message to police and all other first responders throughout the country: when it matters most, Donald Trump will turn his back on you.
