Schumer Video On Trump Administration’s Forced Sterilization And Child Separation Policy At Detention Centers: “We Demand Accountability And Answers”

Brooklyn, NY— Following a New York Times article on an investigative report about the Trump administration’s family separation policy, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) released a video demanding answers and accountability from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) leadership on the appalling conditions at immigration detention facilities.

Last year I joined with my Senate Democratic colleagues to visit detention facilities at the border. We met women, children, and families who came to this country to escape violence and oppression and to find a better life in America.

What we saw in these facilities was nothing short of appalling—people kept in cages, denied basic nutrition and hygiene like diapers and even toothbrushes.

Translator: “Hay ropa limpia?” [Are there clean clothes?]

Woman responds: No ropa limpia. [No clean clothes.]

This could be changed in a minute if the people at the White House and the top of DHS would change the policy, these people could be treated decently.

PBS Newscaster: There’s new reporting on allegations of unwanted hysterectomies and other surgeries at an immigration detention Center in Georgia.

MSNBC: Dawn Wooten, LPN: You have detained women, I’ve had several detained women who had come to me on numerous occasions  and say “Miss Wooten, I had a hysterectomy, why?” I had no answers why they had those procedures… As a human you just don’t treat people inhumane.

Now, the thought that women and girls--like those I met--could be subjected to such invasive and traumatizing medical procedures--as alleged by the DHS whistleblower--is horrifying, but sadly it echoes previous reports of abuse of migrants in these detention centers. We cannot—we must not -- allow this to happen in the United States of America.

We demand answers and accountability from DHS leadership now. We owe it to these women to ensure the preservation of their safety, dignity, and humanity.

No

“Les han dado alguna ropa limpia?”

No
