Arizona

Arizona State University News: US Policymakers Tour ASU's Macrotechnology Works Facility. “State and federal leaders, led by U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo and U.S. Sen. Mark Kelly, and hosted by ASU President Michael Crow, touted the recent passage of the CHIPS and Science Act and got a look at Arizona State University’s MacroTechnology Works facility in Tempe on Tuesday. Arizona State University News: How Arizona Can Advance Innovation, Access In Digital Learning. “The recent passage of the CHIPS and Science Act is a historic investment to surge production of American-made semiconductors and is tied to the nation’s economic and national security. ‘I look at the CHIPS Act as the biggest piece of legislation in the time I’ve been in office,’ Kelly said. ‘It’s transformative, and we need this capability in Arizona. KJZZ: Sen. Mark Kelly Touts Arizona Opportunities To Rake In CHIPS Act Funding. “U.S. Sen. Mark Kelly says Arizona is “well-positioned” to take advantage of new funding available via the CHIPS and Science Act, which includes $52 billion dedicated to boosting domestic semiconductor manufacturing. Kelly and U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimando toured an Arizona State University research and development facility before hosting a roundtable discussion with local business leaders, including those from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, which is already constructing a fabrication plant in Arizona. ASU leaders said they’re poised to educate the next generation of engineers and manufacturers necessary to fill jobs in the burgeoning industry — but Raimondo said the competition for funds will be fierce.” [KJZZ, 8/31/22]

KOAA: Microchip Technologies Plans To Double Workforce At Colorado Springs Plant. “‘We're gonna give our semiconductor industry a real shot in the arm here,’ said Senator Michael Bennet, (D) Colorado. ‘I'm excited about what it means for Americans and for workers in Colorado the chance to earn a decent living.’ Bennet toured the facility with company executives on Thursday and told reporters that pandemic supply chain disruption really exposed national security risks.” [KOAA, 8/11/22]

Connecticut Public Radio: Connecticut Business Celebrates New Federal Help For Chip Shortage. “Now the federal government is investing $52 billion in U.S. companies specifically targeted at the production of semiconductor chips. It’s part of the Creating Helpful Incentives to Produce Semiconductors for America (CHIPS) Act that U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal backed. Blumenthal (D-Conn.) says new federal legislation represents a ‘momentous step’ in turning back the shortage.” [Connecticut Public Radio, 7/31/22]

Georgia

Georgia Public Radio: Warnock Applauds Newly Enacted Bill As A Boost To HBCU Research. “Georgia U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock is praising a recently passed bill signed into law by President Biden as a big win for the state's historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). The CHIPS and Science Act has been touted by supporters as a much-needed boost for business, especially when it comes to semiconductor chip manufacturing. Warnock — who is among those supporters and voted for the bill — is also pointing to another provision of the law that hasn't received as much attention: increased federal funding for HBCU research.” [Georgia Public Radio, 8/22/22]

The Herald-Mail: Struggling Maryland Car Dealers And Tech Companies Hoping US Semiconductor Push Will Help. U.S. Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., said hundreds of Maryland companies rely on chips. ‘Bringing down the costs, reducing the uncertainty in supply chains will be a big benefit to companies throughout the state of Maryland,’ Van Hollen said during an Aug. 10 news call.” [Herakd-Mail, 8/23/22]

MIT News:  U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren Visits MIT To Celebrate Passage Of CHIPS And Science Act.  “’I believe our job in Washington is to build for the future,’ Warren said, addressing a roundtable of university leaders after she toured the MIT.nano facility. ‘I am delighted about $52 billion that is going into chips, that is going into domestic manufacturing, that is going into strengthening our supply chains. But keep in mind … we’ve [also got billions] going directly into increasing the budget of the National Science Foundation. That has the potential to be transformative.’” [MIT News, 8/12/22]

Michigan

WSGW: Sen. Gary Peters Stops at Hemlock Semiconductor as Part of Annual Michigan Motorcycle Tour. “U.S. Senator Gary Peters is on his annual motorcycle tour of Michigan, with a stop Wednesday, August 31 at Hemlock Semiconductor. Peters toured the facility, where hyper pure polysilicon is manufactured for things like cell phones, computers, vehicles and solar panels. Peters highlighted both the CHIPS and Sciences Act, which aims to make the U.S. a leading global producer of polysilicon, and the Inflation Reduction Act, which has provisions to increase renewable energy production.” [WSGW, 8/31/22]

WWMT: Michigan Could Be A Top Beneficiary Of CHIPS Act, Auto Industry Insiders Say. “As President Joe Biden signed the CHIPS and Science Act - or CHIPS Act - this week, investing $52 billion into made-in-American semiconductor manufacturing, Michigan lawmakers declared the legislation a victory for the state. ‘The new CHIPS Act is a big deal for us in Michigan,’ said U.S. Sen. Now, the line is forming to get the grants. Leaders of three Minnesota tech manufacturing companies joined U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar on Tuesday to celebrate passage of the Creating Helpful Incentives to Produce Semiconductors (CHIPS) and Science Act, which President Joe Biden signed into law last week.” [Star Tribune, 8/16/22]

This Is Reno: More Federal Dollars Coming To UNR After Passage Of Science Act Signed By President Biden. “U.S. Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) this week joined University of Nevada, Reno President Brian Sandoval, and a select group of UNR representatives, at the university’s Center for Applied Research. Masto was there to tour the facility and discuss the federal support she helped secure for Nevada’s research institutions. The group toured several of the campus’ laboratories and met with students and researchers who are some of the recipients from the CHIPS and Science Act, which was signed into law Aug. 9, 2022 by President Joe Biden.” [This Is Reno, 8/17/22]

NH Business Review: Expansion Of Silicon Carbide Manufacturing Facility Hailed In Hudson. “Among those at the ribbon-cutting were Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo as well as both of New Hampshire’s U.S. senators, Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan, as well as U.S. Reps. Chris Pappas and Annie Kuster. All four members of the state’s congressional delegation voted in support of the CHIPs Act.” [NH Business Review, 8/17/22]

Nashua Telegraph: Shaheen Visits Cirtronics On Heels Of Historic CHIPS & Science Act Becoming Law. “U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) visited Cirtronics in Milford Wednesday to highlight New Hampshire priorities included in the recently enacted CHIPS & Science Act. During the visit, Shaheen highlighted the impact the legislation will have on Cirtronics and other manufacturers across the state. ‘Granite State manufacturers play an important role in supporting economic development and innovation across New Hampshire,’ said Shaheen.” [Nashua Telegraph, 8/11/22]

New Mexico

Albuquerque Journal: Legislation Expected To Revive US Technology. “New Mexico could also capture a significant amount of CHIPS money for research and development through Sandia and Los Alamos National Laboratory. The law allocates $16.5 billion in new money for science and innovation, and $14.7 billion for infrastructure upgrades and modernization at DOE’s 17 national laboratories. New Mexico Democratic Sen. Ben Ray Luján played a pivotal role in securing that funding, which he discussed in a press conference Friday afternoon with the directors of both national labs.” [Albuquerque Journal, 8/12/22]

North Country Public Radio: In Canton, Schumer Says CHIPS Act Will Bring More Manufacturing Jobs To The North Country. “New York Senator and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer visited Canton yesterday to talk about the new CHIPS and Science Act, which he co-wrote with Indiana Republican Senator Todd Young. President Joe Biden signed the bill into law earlier this month. Schumer says it will support microchip manufacturing in the United States, and particularly here in New York.” [North Country Public Radio, 8/30/22]

The Batavian: Schumer: 'We Want To Build The Future In Batavia, Not Beijing'.  “Schumer is bullish on WNY STAMP, the 1,250-acre technology park that is now shovel-ready in the Town of Alabama.  He believes that before long, there will be a semiconductor plant at the park.‘ Companies are seeing upstate New York is the place to be,’ Schumer said.” [The Batavian, 8/11/22]

Troy Record: Schumer Touts Albany For NSTC Epicenter Following Passage Of CHIPS And Science Bill. “U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer visited the Albany Nanotech Complex Monday to celebrate the bipartisan CHIPS and Science bill that has passed through Congress and is expected to be signed by President Joe Biden in the coming days, providing new investment in the nation’s semiconductor industry and in R&D and innovation that can support thousands of local jobs. The bill also will create America’s first National Semiconductor Technology Center (NSTC). The bill was signed into law this week to deliver the largest federal investment in manufacturing and innovation in decades, helping bring manufacturing back from overseas to places like Upstate New York and the Southern Tier. ‘Corning Incorporated is the beating heart of the Southern Tier’s economy,’ Schumer said, ‘when we help them invest in the industries of the future it means good-paying jobs that last generations,’ he said.” [ WETM, 8/12/22]

WKBW: Lawmakers Hope New Legislation Will Eventually Solve The Chip Shortage Impacting Numerous Manufacturers. “New York Senior Senator Chuck Schumer has pushed for this legislation for years and says it will incentivize manufacturers to make those chips here in the United States. He was at Baxter International today where they rely on the chip to make life saving medical devices. He talked about his plans to help them get those chips. Senator Schumer says it's a two part plan including, ‘getting Texas Instruments to get the chips but second get New York and America to start making chips here and that's what I'm hoping to do. Watertown Daily Times, Schumer Touts Semiconductor Legislation In Visit To Canton’s Corning Plant. “Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer visited Corning Inc. Monday to tout his recently passed CHIPS and Science Act and how it would help keep the U.S. at the forefront of innovation and create jobs….With more than 7,000 employees in New York, Corning has roughly 380 at the Canton facility. Toledo Blade: Sen. Brown Visits UAW Leadership To Discuss CHIPS Act, Future Of Auto Manufacturing.  “U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown met with UAW leaders to tout the recently-passed CHIPS Act as well as to hear concerns from the unions about navigating unemployment while off work, recruiting more employees, and what the rise of electric vehicles will mean for auto manufacturing in northwest Ohio.‘ We need to work to get a battery plant in northwest Ohio,’ Mr. Brown said after the roundtable on Friday. ‘That’s the biggest takeaway.’ The meeting took place at UAW Local 14 in Toledo, and the senator met with representatives from UAW Local 12,  UAW Local 14, and UAW Region 2B members.” [Toledo Blade, 9/2/22]

OPB: Task Force Outlines Path For Oregon Semiconductor Competitiveness. “‘We’re releasing a battle plan for Oregon to build an even stronger chip industry that continues generating jobs here in the Silicon Forest and across the state,’ said Democratic U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden at a press event accompanying the report’s release. Wyden co-chaired the task force with Gov. Kate Brown and Portland General Electric president and CEO Maria Pope. Oregon’s Silicon Forest hosts a significant concentration of chipmakers, including Intel, the state’s largest private employer with 22,000 workers in Washington County.” [OPB, 8/17/22]

WTVR: Virginia Car Dealer Hopes CHIPS Act Helps To Bring Business 'Back To Normal'. “U.S. Senator Tim Kaine (D - Virginia) said Virginia could be among the states that get a semiconductor facility.‘ Every state wants a part of this. The states that already have chip manufacturing are going to be in the front and Virginia does,’ he said. A Micron facility is already up and running in Northern Virginia.” [WTVR, 8/16/22]

VCU News: At VCU, Sen. Warner Says CHIPS Act Will Bring Semiconductor Research, Cutting-Edge Manufacturing Back To US, Virginia. “U.S. Sen.
