Trump Restarted “Heavy” Strikes Last Night Prolonging & Escalating A Conflict With No Plan, Endgame, Or Strategy
GOP Continues To Rubberstamp Trump’s Reckless War Even As Americans’ Of The Conflict Tops 70%
Washington, D.C. – Today, Senate Republicans again blocked a Democratic War Powers Resolution that would have reasserted Congressional authority over the Iran War and withdrawn U.S. troops from hostilities in Iran.
Congressional Republicans continue to rubberstamp President Trump’s Iran War, despite bipartisan and bicameral passage of previous efforts to end the Iran War and even as it becomes increasingly apparent the administration has no coherent strategy, no clear endgame, and no way out of this horrible escalating mess.
Americans are feeling the pain of this dangerous and unnecessary war. Tragically, 18 servicemembers have been killed and hundreds more have been wounded. Rather than approach the situation with compassion, President Trump has penned diatribes on Truth Social arguing the human cost could be higher and callously changed the official number of dead soldiers on government websites.
This is now the second time that Republicans have voted against a War Powers Resolution since the tragic death of four additional servicemembers earlier this month.
Additionally, the war has exacerbated the affordability crisis that Republicans have unleashed upon the American people. Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Analytics, said that “the war is costing the average household more than $1,200.” Gas prices are skyrocketing, topping four dollars a gallon across the country.
It’s clear – the American people don’t want this war. According to a CNN poll, 72% of Americans disapprove of Trump’s handling of the Iran War. And yet – Republicans side with Trump, not the people.
“This aimless war has been one of the greatest foreign policy catastrophes in American history and Trump continues to double down at every turn,” said Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer. “The American people are begging for relief from Trump’s total failure, yet Republicans continue to rubber stamp Trump’s war. We need to get our servicemembers out of harm’s way. We need to bring down prices. And we need to finally stop the fighting. Senate Republicans cannot continue to sit on the sidelines as Trump’s war escalates out of control.”
Senator Kirsten Gillibrand’s War Powers Resolution marks the thirteenth vote Senate Democrats have forced in recent months to end the war. Today’s vote was the eleventh time that Republicans have voted down a War Powers Resolution.
Leader Schumer has promised to continue to force vote after vote until this horrible war comes to an end.
